Speculative Design Project

The aim of this assignment is to research and explore emerging technologies and trends in UX design engaging in a speculative design process.

Consider the impact that this technology could have in 5-10+ year timescale and design a hypothetical User Experience/User Interface (incorporating your chosen technology) that could meet a user need in the future

Background

Researchers from University of Tokyo have recently developed a number of electronic skin technologies which have the ability to act as a digital display and bio signs monitoring devices Exisiting light-emitting diodes (PLEDs) and organic photodetectors (OPDs) are used to realize optoelectronic skins, (OE-Skin).


Maturity

Current lifespan is several days Power consumtion extremely low. Extremely cheap to produce

Application

Potential for them to be used in other areas such as sports science, military and emergency services.

Area of Focus

Potential for the future of non-invasive biomedical monitoring devices Continual monitoring of various health signs, with minimal inconvenience to the patient

Current Technology

Stigmatism

Current technology is sno tsuitabel for use in an active setting making them restrictive for younger patients. This can result in stigmatism of Illness due to high visibility and restriction of mobility.

Not Waterproof

Many of the current devices are not waterproof and in some cases have poorly improvised solutions, this makes daily activities such as washing difficult and time consuming, with devices being susceptible to damage

Bulky & Complex

Many current devices are quite large, have trailing wires for sensors which can become entagled and restrict mobility The majority of devices a have complex or poor interface design with small screens aimed at medical professionals

BPRO G2

Description

The BPro®G2 is capable of capturing Blood Pressure (BP) over 24 hours via the wrist. It is convenient to use, light weight, non-disruptive, cuffless, and takes a BP reading every 15 minutes over 24 hours (96 in total).

Pros

Smaller form factor looks like a watch. Does not look like medical device and an be used in active setting. 24hr remote and local data

Only measures blood pressure, display quite small, not friendly for low tech literate and not waterproof

SOMNOtouch

Description

Measures blood pressure continuously, beat-to-beat, based on the pulse transit time (PTT), which is determined by a 3-lead ECG and the photoplethymogram from the finger clip.

Pros

5 routine examinations. Currently on the market an FDA Approved. Real time monitoring locally.

Cons

Very Bulky and not what people have come to expect of wearables. Requires monitoring leads as stigma of sickness. Could not be used in an active setting. Not waterproof and no remote Access.

Caretaker

Description

Blood Pressure (“cNIBP”), Heart Rate, and other physiological parameters, accurate remote patient monitoring via secure Android App, HIPPA-compliant Cloud Portals, can interface with other patient monitoring systems.

Initial pencil sketches to define key elements, clear easy to use user interface, viewable at a distance and simplified information through icon usage

Prototype created to establish correct scale and viewable areas when on a patients arm, before progressing to high fidelity




Design system

Using the sizing from the inital low fidelty prototype a system for the creation of buttons and icons was developed. Imagery was kept simple and self explanatory where possilbe, with large touchable areas, so as to make use bye the key persona as intuative as poosible. A number of colour pallete tests where carried to establish viewable accessibility and suitablilty for placement on skin.To ensure correct sizing for the prototype, a to scale blueprint as developed

Durable

Due to the nature of materials used the DigiSkin is waterproof, extremely lightweigth and flexible allowing it deform to the changes in the patients own skin and be used in active settings.

Glanceable

Clear and easy to understand information, readable at the same distance you would read a watch from.

Improved User Interface

Easy touch targets, with large hit target areas for interactions. Simplifed readouts with both advanced and novice modes.

Small Footprint

Due to the nature of materials used the DigiSkin is waterproof, extremely lightweigth and flexible allowing it deform to the changes in the patients own skin and be used in active settings.

The material and technologies used drastically reduce the bulk and need for wires and sensors. This reduces its visibility and In turn any stigmatism associated with illness.
